Chemical energetics Flashcards
Exothermic Reaction
It is a reaction where energy is released causing the reactants to be greater than the products. Reactants > Products
Endothermic Reaction
It is a reaction where energy is absorbed causing the reactants to be lesser than the products. Reactants < Products
Activation Energy
It is the minimum amount of energy required for a reaction to take place
Bond breaking
The process of bond breaking is an endothermic process. Energy must be absorbed to break bonds apart.
Bond making
The process of bond making is an exothermic process. Energy (heat) is released when this happens.
Advantages of hydrogen as a fuel
Very energy rich
No pollutants are formed
Nitrogen oxides not formed (these are environmentally harmful i.e. acid rain)
Disadvantages of hydrogen as a fuel
Expensive to produce
Difficult (and expensive) to store
Formation is what type of reaction
Exothermic
Enthalpy
Energy stored in bonds
