Neoplastic conditions of bone Flashcards

1
Q

fibrous tumors of bone

A
  • fibrosarcoma
  • medullary cavity and periosteum
  • less likely to metastasize than osteosarcoma

Q

cartilage-forming tumors

A
  • rare except in sheep
  • difficult to diagnose and classify
  • chondroma: benign
  • chondrosarcoma: malignant, arise from cartilage, occur in pelvis/nasal cavity/sternum/ribs

Q

osteosarcoma

A
  • malignant tumor in which osteoid or bone is produced
  • most common skeletal neoplasm in dogs and cats, rare in other species
  • often metastasizes to lungs
  • painful swellings of bones
  • forelegs > hindlegs
  • proximal humerus/distal radius > distal tibia/femur
  • mature males of large breeds
  • sudden increase risk after 5 years, decreases after 9 years of age

Q

tumors metastatic to bone

A
  • direct extension or hematogenous
  • hematogenous metastases very rare in farm animals, relatively rare in pets
