Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards

1
Q

Nitrogen cycle

A

1) Nitrogen in the air can get fixed into plants via the nitrogen-fixing bacteria which live on legume root nodules
2) Nitrogen-fixing bacteria do this by converting nitrogen gas in the air into nitrates
3) Nitrates in the plant forms plant protein
4) Plants die and decomposers break down the waste matter into ammonia
5) Nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia into nitrates
6) Nitrates can be absorbed by plant roots or denitrifying bacteria break down nitrates in the soil, releasing nitrogen gas into the atmosphere
