Recall when the use of engine anti-ice is required

A

ON THE GROUND:

  • Immediately after engine start and remain on during all ground ops when icing present or anticipated
  • Icing conditions exist <10 deg TAT and any visible moisture with <1600 meters visibility also ice slush snow sleet standing water present on airfield

NOTE: Engine anti-ice is not required on the ground when the temp is <-40 C OAT

IN FLIGHT

757 OP PROCEDURES
-Operate engine A/I ON when in visible moisture at TAT is +10C or below, no exceptions

767 OP PROCEDURES
- Engine anti-ice must be AUTO or ON during all flight ops when icing conditions exist/anticipated, except during climb/cruise when the temp is <-40C SAT.
- Engine Anti-ice must be AUTO or ON before, and during descent in all icing conditions, including <-40C SAT
- when operating in areas of possible icing, activate engine anti-ice before entering icing conditions

NOTE: Engine anti-ice must be in AUTO or ON before and “during descent in all icing conditions” even when temps below -40C SAT

A

Ice accumulation on:

  • flight deck windshield frames
  • windshield center post
  • windshield wiper arm
  • side windows

Can be indications of airframe icing conditions

CAUTION: Do not operate wing anti-ice when the total air temperature (TAT) is above 10C

  • On the ground - WING off, L/R ENG ON

-Airbone (After takeoff flow) - WING ON or OFF As Req. L/R ENG ON

“Selector Airplanes”

  • On the ground - WING OFF, L/R ENG ON
  • Airbone (After Takeoff flow) - WING AUTO, L/R ENG AUTO

NOTE: AUTO / AUTO / AUTO accomplished on the After Takeoff Flow

NOTE: Engine Bleed air MUST be used for anti-icing as the APU bleed air is insufficient. During single engine taxi, when engine anti-ice is required, operate one pack only

  • the aircraft is on the ground and neither engine is operating

ICING Light

  • Illuminated (amber) - the ice detecting sensor has detected ICE

“SELECTOR” Airplanes

  • Illuminated (amber) - Engine / wing icing is detected and either engine or wing anti ice is manually selected OFF or an anti-ice valve is closed

Illumianted (amber)

  • ice detector system is failed

NOTE: This is because BOTH ice detectors have failed

Recall that “selector” equipped aircraft with WING and L/R ENG selected to AUTO do not generate EICAS messages or discrete flights unless there is a system fault

  • In AUTO, an engine anti-ice fault is indicated by a discrete ICING light and a discrete L/R ENG VALVE light
  • the discrete ICING light will produce the Master CAUTION EICAS message ICING ENGINE
  • The discrete L/R ENG VALVE light will produce the ADVISORY EICAS message (L/R) ENG ANTI-ICE
  • In AUTO, a wing anti-ice fault is indicated by a discrete ICING light and a discrete L/R WING VALVE light
  • The discrete ICING light will produce ADVISORY EICAS message ICING WING
  • The discrete L/R WING VALVE light will produce the ADVISORY EICAS message L/R WING ANTI-ICE
