Procedure

A
  • 14 university-aged participants
  • 2 groups: control and experimental
    • Experimental group experienced articulatory suppression (repeated numbers 1 and 2 while reading the letters) while learning the series of letters
  • Each participants had 10 trials (randomized order)
  • Letters chosen for the study were phonologically dissimilar (F K L M R X Q)

Findings

A
  • Experimental group scored lower than the control group
  • Supports working model of memory
    • Articulatory suppression interferes with the phonological loop

Limitations

A
  • Not possible to know whether participants were engaging their phonological loop or visuo-spatial sketchpad to learn the letter sequence
    • Modification: Read letter sequence to participants rather than have them read it.
