Cartographic Scale
how much area you can see at one time and the amount of detail you will be able to see.
Global Scale
You can see the entire world
Regional Scale
You can see just one region
Country Scale
You can see just one country
State Scale Map
You can see just one state
Verbal Scale
Uses words to show the relationship between real life distance and map distance
Ex: “One inch equals one thousand miles.”
Verbal Scale
Ratio Scale
Uses a fraction or ratio to show the relationship between real life distance and map distance
Ex: 1 in/1000 miles
Ratio Scale
Graphic Scale
Uses bars to show the relationship between real life distance and map distance
Large Scale Map
will show a LARGE amount of detail
Small Scale Map
will show a SMALL amount of detail
Supranational
The average of one statistic across countries grouped together. Notice how entire regions share the same color since one average is applied across the region.
National
The average of one statistic for each country. Note how each country gets a different color individually, but that each entire country shares the same color.
State
The average of one statistic for each state within a country. See how each state gets its own average? If this was a national scale, the whole country would have one color.
