Indicator dilution technique: The plasma compartment has protein, while the IF doesn’t, therefore to measure plasma compartment you inject radiolabeled protein. In the ECF you inject a Na+ isotope or a small sugar that doesn’t cross cell membranes (insulin). In the IF you use plasma tracer and an ECF tracer and subtract to get IF.
