Ch 10 Futato - The Adjective Flashcards
If a noun is in the dual, does the adjective take the dual ending?
No - it would take the plural ending. (No dual endings for adjectives.)
In what ways must adjectives agree with their nouns?
in gender and number (when prefixes are added, vowels may change)
What are the three uses of adjectives in Hebrew?
attributive
predicative
substantive
How do we identify an attributive adjective?
It FOLLOWS the noun it describes, and agrees with it in gender, number and definiteness.
What is true of a predicate adjective?
- never has the definite article
- must agree with noun in gender and number
- tends to come before its noun
- when translating, must insert a form of “to be” verb (is, are…)
What is a substantive adjective?
An adjective used as a noun (does not appear to modify a noun). Its ending is used to determine who/what referring to: an old man, old woman, an old one. May or may not have a definite article.
In Hebrew, when making a comparison, what word order is used?
adj + N/P + מִן +N/P
N-noun, P-pronoun
Can a noun be described with two or more adjectives in Hebrew?
Yes - by using the vav conjunction on subsequent adjectives
When an adjective behaves like a geminate noun, what happens?
- the 2nd consonant has a dagesh
- If the 2nd cons. is a gutteral, instead of a dagesh, there is compensatory lengthening of the vowel preceeding it.
What happens when an ending is added to a word that ends in segol-he in the MS?
The segol-he drops before adding endings:
When an ending is added to an adjective, what should we keep in mind?
- qamets may have shortened to a sheva
- a dagesh may have been inserted in 2nd consonant
- a segol-he may have dropped from the masculine/singular form before the ending was added
If both a noun and the adjective modifying it are definite, what must be true of the adjective?
The adjective must be attributive.
We know for sure an adjective is predicative when what is true?
- the adj comes BEFORE the noun
- the noun is definite, but the adjective is INdefinite
True or False?
If a plural noun has a singular meaning, the adjective describing it can be singular in form.
True
What preposition also performs special functions, like being used in comparisons, in a partitive manner, or to indicate “too”?
