What is the upper class?
A small class full of economically privileged people who have assets and property. Mostly born into wealth.
What is ascribed status?
Where you are born into your status (e.g aristocracy)
What is middle class?
People from mixed education, with less wealth but still a decent amount. Mostly achieved their position and have professional jobs.
What is the working class?
In relative poverty, manual jobs may have low paid office jobs too. State school educated and are in a bad situation with cost of living.
What is the under class?
Those in long term unemployment, some are homeless due to cost of living.
What are the 3 ways class can be identified?
Occupation (manual/non manual), wealth (wages/savings) and habitus (way they dress/spend leisure time)
What is the economic form of capital?
The financial and other tangible assets.
What is symbolic capital?
Qualifications, honours and reputation.
What is social capital?
Family, networks, and relationships (those you know)
What is cultural capital?
Knowledge, tastes, and cultural dispositions (the way you speak)
What is habitus?
The way we make judgments about someone’s class through accent etc.
What is class conflict?
Where the uppers class want higher profits so workers need low wages. Due to working classes wanting higher wages it’ll eventually start a revolution.
