What is Sociology?
It is the study of human social behaviour.
What are norms?
Expected social behaviours, they put values into practice.
What are values?
Beliefs and morals linked to what people find important.
What is primary socialisation?
The first stage of socialisation which happens in the early childhood within the home. Offers basic social norms, habits and rules. Also teaches gender socialisation.
What are feral children?
Children who haven’t gone through primary socialisation.
What is secondary socialisation?
Where universal norms and blues are learnt through education. Learn skills in the world of work.
What are agencies of socialisation?
Family, education, role models etc.
What is a role model?
Who’s behaviour you imitate. E.g., a parent.
What is social solidarity?
Subjects such as history teach us about the society we are part of.
What are Universalistic Values?
Values learnt in school etc. everyone follows these in wider society.
What is hidden curriculum?
Uniform, punctuality, respect for authority and structure. (Learn norms that aren’t taught)
What is socialisation?
Life long process of learning cultures, values etc. through social agencies.
What is conformity?
Tendency for people to adopt the behaviour, attitudes and values of other members of a group.
What is deviance?
Where an individual doesn’t conform to social norms/values.
What is social control?
A term given to methods used to persuade or force individuals to conform.
