What is the difference between manually reviewing a differential and using an analyzer?
An analyzer will count the cells but will not tell us the quality of them. We need to visually view them to ensure there are no concerns or disease processes.
What are conical tubes for?
Spinning urine samples.
What does the colour of the blood tube indicate?
The additive in the tube.
What is in a green tube?
What are they typically used for?
Heparin.

What is the most important thing to note about blood collected with tubes that contain an anticoagulant?
The test must be run within one hour, or the sample must be refrigerated.
Can blood in a tube with an anticoagulant be frozen to preserve it?
No they cannot. The sample will not be usable if frozen.
Why is the lavender top tube preferred for hematology?
It is best for cell preservation. It does not change the morphology.
What must be included on the label of all samples collected?
Patient name and ID number
Date and time collected
Owners name
