lanyon has been a representitive of the conforming slightly backwards christian scientists who reject a new technological era for more relaxed experiments, jekyll is a promethian character who foils lanyon in his need to go further than man has before, he defies the biblical belief that only jesus can perform changed of shape and only for the upmost moral
perhaps stevenson is warning against extreme sceintific advancements, promethesus explores too far and tests the gods and is met with eternal hel, hyde and jekyll draw constant connotations to hell

he represents the older form of scientists as a foil to jekylls promethian need to advance in discovery, he wants religion to coexist with advancemnets

this however is more so used for irony as lanyon and the christians, represenitive of those who feared an era of discovery and change, brutally mock his experiments that are proved to be successful
damon and pythias is a greek allusion to mythical best friends

despire imminent differences that cause a heavy rift in their friendship, te idea of being a conformist genleman and having a good rapport amongst your peers through loyalty was more important than differences so they are very loyal to one another
initial description of lanyon vs post tranformation
he is red and hearty- clearly very large and full of life and flmaboyant
when utterson sees him for the last time hes described as very pale which is a stark juxaposiiton showing the horors of overknowlege- this also plays into the colour imagery weve seen throughout of hydes raw evil presence being black such as in ‘black sneering coolness’ whilst other characters morality is excenuated

he turns to religion in horror upon realisation, he cannot find alogical explanation much like jekyll post murder, there is no logic for the presence of this evil

he knows that he has been pushed too far and yet he wants to die not acceptinng the truth as it is too intense and too starkly against his morals
