Excretory System Flashcards
Function of excretory
Waste must be removed from the body because it’s harmful and prohibits the proper functioning of the body and the excretory system removes metabolic waste products from the blood and regulates the body’s fluids by means of excretion
Main processes
Filtration
Reabsorption
Diffusion
Excretion
Filtration
Occurs in the kidney where the blood of the body passes through the kidney as part of the circulatory system and the waste products of metabolism such as urea(waste products of breakdown of protein, surplus salts and excess water are removed from the blood through filtration and are collected in the filtrate.
Reabsorption
Blood vessels in the kidney reabsorb useful substances from the filtrate eg glucose and water and mineral salta.
Diffusion
Certain substances are transported in and out of the blood vessels of the kidney through the process of diffusion
Excretion
The remaining filtrate (waste substances of metabolism that are not removed through filtration and reabsorption) is collected in small ducts and this liquid is called urine. The small ducts form large ducts and urine flows from the kidney through the ureteral into the bladder and once it’s fill, the urine leave the body through the urethra.
Kidneys
Locate in the abdominal cavity one on each side of the veterbral column just below the diaphragm more of less the height of your elbow
The right kidney sits lower in the body than the left. The kidney is bean shaped.
Renal artery vs renal vein
Renal vein transports purified blood to the heart and the renal artery tenasports blood from the heart containing metabolic waste substances to the kidney at the rate of about 1,3 liters per minute
Main functions of kidneys
Plays a major part in Excretion of metabolic waste substances
They control the amount of water in the blood and tissue fluid.
The control the concentration of mineral salts in the blood and tissue fluid.
Ureter
Two ureter that connect each kidney to the bladder and transport the urine from the kidney to the bladder.
Bladder
Balloon like organ that lies below the abdomen where urine is temporarily stored before being excreted during urination
Urethra
A duct that connects the bladder to the exterior of the body through which urine is excreted.
Health issues
Kidney failure
The kidney loses its ability to filter and remove waste substances proer8csusing large amounts of solute and fluids to accumulate late in the blood and need to have their blood medically cleansed through the process of dialysis.
Bladder infection
Cystitis is when bacteria enters the bladder and causes and infection casing swelling and pain when a person urinates
Kidney stones
Hard objects formed in he urine by chemicals and occur when the guild intake is too low which leads to elevated concentration of solute in the kidney and leads to a small crystal formally and could be excreted in the urine and causes pain in the urinary tract.
