COGNITIVE APPROACH Flashcards

1
Q

what are the three cognitive approaches

A

1- Assumes that info is processed through a tripartite structure; input, output and processing
2- people have individual differences in the cognitive processing such as language, memory, attention and thinking explaining their behaviour and emotion
3- Similarities and differences between people can be established based on their individual cognitive patterns

Q

Give the 4 strengths of this approach

A
  • investigates other areas which behaviourism neglects
  • A useful approach with the use of psychometric tests
  • this approach can be used to explain other different approaches in psychology
  • it utilises lab experiments therefore can be replicated

Q

Give 3 weaknesses to the approach

A
  • considered reductionist
  • unscientific as we cannot guess what some one thinking
  • does not clearly take into account individual differences, assumes all cognitive processes are the same

Q

using Pozzulo, outline assumptions of the approach

A
  • Assumes that cognition is processed through a tripartite
  • assumes that everyone’s behaviour can be explained in terms of the role of cognitive processed such as memory
  • similarities and differences between adults and children can be made

Q

Using Baron, outline assumptions of the approach

A

-Assumes that cognition is processed input( eyes) processing(decision making) output(the chosen emotion)
-the similarities and differences (HFA/AS vs ‘Normal’ adults) can be. established due to their individual patterns of cognition
