ELECTROLYSIS Flashcards
what is electrolysis
passing an electrical current through a substance to cause oxidation and reduction at the electrodes
what is an electrolyte
liquid or a solution that contains an ionic compound where the ions are free to use
which electrode is positive
anode
which electrode is negative
cathode
what happens at the positive electrode and is it oxidation or reduction
negative ions go to anode and are discharged. When they are discharged they turn into an element and go into the atmosphere
oxidised
are ions reduced or oxidised at the cathode
oxidised
why do electrodes have to be replaced
oxygen reacts with carbon from positive electrodes forming carbon dioxide causing them to burn away
what substance reduces the melting point and makes electrolysis cheaper
cryolite
what happens at the cathode in electrolysis with a solution
if a element is more reactive than hydrogen
hydrogen will be reduced at the cathode
what happens at the anode in electrolysis with a solution
if there is a halogen present it will be oxidised at the anode
if there is no halide oxygen will be produced
