Food Production Flashcards

1
Q

What are the solutions to Food Production?

A

Not enough food to feed everyone.
Need to increase yield (amount) of crops grown.
We can increase yield (amount) by Intensive Farming, Biological Control and Genetically Modifying Crops.

Q

What are Fertilisers?

A

Fertilisers can be added to soil to increase nitrate concentration to increase crop yield.
Nitrates are a form of nitrogen.
Absorbed by plants
Used to produce amino acids (proteins).
Protein is used for plant growth.

Q

What are the disadvantages of fertilisers?

A

Increases nitrate concentration in water.
Increases algae population (algae bloom).
Reduces light levels killing aquatic plants.
Dead plants more food for bacteria (increase).
Bacteria use up oxygen.
Organisms die which decreases biodiversity.
