Q

Underlying Biology

A

Enzymes are biological catalysts, they speed up reactions but are not used up or changed. In pH, enzymes change shaped in the active and no longer work. This is called being denatured. Enzymes are protein molecules that are made up of amino acids. When the activity is at its highest rate, it is called being at its optimum activity.

Q

Data Collection/Method

A

I measured 4 potatoes and put them into each test tube containing detergent, hydrogen peroxide and 4 different pHs. I let them sit for 5 minutes and then measured the height of foam. As the height of foam increases the rate of enzyme activity increases.

Q

Analysis

A

The data collected compared to the second source is similar. The optimum pH in the second source is pH 7. This implies that the enzymes are most active at pH 7. The date collected said that the optimum was pH 8. This emphasises the enzymes are most active at pG 8 instead of pH 7.

Q

Conclusion

A

Enzymes activity was seen in every pH level, as all the test tube foam increased. The optimum pH level was 8 meaning it had the highest measurement of foam compared to any of the other pHs. The most enzyme activity was in pH8.

Q

Evaluation

A

The mass of the potato of each one was not the same, I used a ruler to measure it. To improve the experiment I could have used a scale to measure the mass, instead of the length of it.
