What is ableism?
It is the belief that people with disabilities have less worth than people without disabilities.
For instance, some people may hold the false belief that people with disabilities matter less than non-disabled people
Define the word disabilities:
It is an umbrella term, covering impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions
What is an impairment?
It is a problem in the body function or structure
What is an activity limitation?
It is difficulty encountered by an individual in executing a task or action
What is participation restriction?
It is a problem experienced by an individual in involvement in life situations.
What complex phenomenon is reflected on disabilities?
That it encompasses the features on a person’s body and features of the society in which he or she lives in.
What does the medical model encompass in the models of disabilities?
AKA the tragedy model, looks at the disability as tragic, an aversion from the “norm” and something that must be fixed.
Marginalizes these individuals and labels them in a class beneath those with functioning limbs, senses or less-than-desirable traits
What does the social model encompass in the models of disabilities?
It is a re-examination of how we view disabilities. Allows us to examine the environment in which we live, rather than all responsibility on the individual. Enables them to be more productive and have a fullfilling life
What are dental barriers that can be encountered with individuals with disabilities?
Hard to reach areas (top shelf)
Hard to maneuver in the chair
Difficulty staying still
Transferring and mobility device to dental chair
What is dignity?
It is the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect. It is the right of a person to be valued & respected for their own sake
What are different types of disabilities?
1.) Developmental
2.) Acquired
3.) Seniors
