Working Model Of Memory-BADDLEY + HITCH Flashcards

1
Q

Explain the intro of the working store model of memory.

A

-explains how the STM works
-the STM is not a unitary store
-they are connected stores which work independently as active processors

Q

How does the central executer works?

A

-attentional process
-monitors incoming data
-decides what’s done
-delegates tasks accordingly
-takes on the most demanding tasks

Q

How does the phonological loop work?

A

-auditory information passes from the CE
-phonological store, inner ear
-articicularly loop, silently repeating and rehearsing(maintenance rehearsal)
-codes acoustically

Q

How does the visual-spacial sketchpad work?

A

-visual information passes from the CE
-responsible for setting up images
-temporarily stores visual and spacial information
-capacity is 3-4 items and codes visually

Q

Briefly explain the episodic buffer.

A

Collects and combines information from the other parts and creates a event (episode)

Q

Explain the Evaluation of Dual Tasks?

A

-supports the notion that there are separate components in the STM which have limited capacity
-For Example Baddley found that ppt found it more difficult to perform two visual tasks at the same time
-(use a pointer to track light on a screen while imagining the letter ‘f’)
-than performing the visual task alone or with a verbal task
-(silently repeating the word ‘the’)
-because it suggests that doing 2 visual tasks is competing for capacity of the same slave system
-Whereas when doing a visual and verbal task the is no decrease in performance as there is no competition for capacity
-increases credibility

Q

Explain the evaluation for Shallice and Warrington?

A

-In the 1970 Shallice and Warrington studied the patient KF who suffered from amnesia
-KF’s recall for digits was poor when read out loud
-recall was better when he could visually see the digits himself
-Supports because it suggests that there must be different stores within the STM
-one to process visual information and one to process auditory information,as the Pl is damaged
