Carl Rogers
Rogers chose the term ___ rather than drive.
tendency

Actualizing tendency
Rogers believed that as a child’s ___ begins to form, the child develops a need for ____ _____ from
significant others.
self-concept
positive regard
includes all aspects of one’s being and one’s
experiences that are perceived in awareness by the

Self-concept
is when a person develops a need to be
loved, liked, or accepted by another.
Positive regard
represents a misalignment between a client’s self-concept and their actual experiences, causing distress.
Incongruence
The client must perceive and experience the counselor’s
communication of three core conditions:
genuineness
unconditional positive regard
empathy
TWO TYPES OF RESISTANCE
• The client’s wish to avoid “the pain of revealing, to oneself and another, the feelings that have been denied to
awareness”.
• rendering judgment on the client of her disclosures.
