Drugs Used Flashcards
Give a systemic steroid used in oral medicine
What do they do?
Prednisolone
Glucocorticoid that has anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, antineoplastic and vasoconstriction effects
Method of action of Prednisolone?
Binds to glucocorticoid receptor on cell
Mediates changes in gene expression leading to impeded pro-inflammatory responses and promotes anti-inflammatory cell responses
Side fx of Prednisolone?
Weight gain due to alteration in glucose tolerance
Adrenal insufficiency
Osteoporosis - reduced calcium absorption
Mania / anxiety
Give an immunosuppressive medication
Azathioprine
Mycophenolate
MOA azathioprine?
Inhibits synthesis of DNA and RNA in immune cells leading to down-regulation of the immune system
Adverse effects of azathioprine?
Anaemia
Increased cancer risk
Increased risk of infection
GIT issues
Give a DMARD Drug
Hydroxychloroquinone
MOA of hydroxychloroquine?
Interfere with activation of TLR - leading to reduced activation of immune cells and subsequent inflammation
Side fx of hydroxychloroquine?
GIT SENSITIVITY / ISSUES
Mood alteration
Anaemia
Give a biological therapy used in OM
Infliximab
How does infliximab work?
Monoclonal antibody that inhibits TNF-alpha (tumour necrosis factor)
This decreases the activation of the immune system
Side fx of rituximab?
Immunosuppression
- severe infection
- reactivation of latent infections
GIT issues
