Chapter 4: Biological molecules Flashcards
What are the main three nutrients required by organisms?
Carbohydrates
Proteins
Lipids
What are nutrients?
Organic molecules.
What do you mean by organic molecules?
Organic molecules are those that contain carbon atoms covalently bonded to other atoms in their respective molecules
What atoms do carbohydrates contain?
Carbon
Hydrogen
Oxygen
What atoms do lipids contain?
Carbon
Hydrogen
Oxygen
What atoms do proteins contain?
Carbon
Hydrogen
Oxygen
Nitrogen
Sulfur (sometimes)
Give some examples of carbohydrates.
Starch
Cellulose
Glycogen
Give some examples of proteins
Lipase
Pepsin
Amylase
Haemoglobin
Insulin
Give some examples of lipids.
Cholesterol
Triglycerides
Write the chemical formula of glucose.
C6H12O6
What is a monomer?
Sugars made up of one carbon ring
What is a disaccharide?
A disaccharide are sugars with two carbon rings in their molecules.
What is a polysaccharide?
When many starch, glycogen or cellulose molecules are joined together, the carbohydrate is called a polysaccharide
What are proteins made up of?
amino acids
How are proteins formed?
Each type of protein has its amino acids arranged in a particular sequence.
Even a small difference in the order of the amino acids results in a different protein being formed
