NEW - BONES Flashcards

Q

Discuss the structure and function of long bones within the Skeletal System?

A

Structure - Long bones are cylindrical in shape with a shaft called the diaphysis and two ends called epiphyses. They are primarily composed of compact bone tissue surrounding a central cavity filled with bone marrow.

Function - Long bones provide support, facilitate movement, protect vital organs, and are involved in red blood cell production. They act as levers for the skeletal muscle system, enabling locomotion and various body movements.

Q

Discuss the structure and function of long bones within the Skeletal System?

A

Structure - Consist of a thin layer of compact bone surrounding spongy bone tissue. They do not have a medullary cavity or a well-defined shaft and are often covered with articular cartilage.

Function - Provide support, stability, and limited movement. They distribute body weight and withstand compression forces. Additionally, they play a role in shock absorption and provide a surface for muscle attachment.

Q

Explain the structure of bone?

(5 marks)

A

Bone is a rigid connective tissue that consists of cells, fibres, and matrix.

There are three types of cells in bone.

Bone contains collagen fibres, which provide elasticity and strength to the tissue.

The matrix of bone is primarily made up of calcium, which gives bone its hardness.
