Tissues, membranes + cavities Flashcards
define tissue
a group of connected cells that carry out the same function
define organ
a group of tissues which perform a function as well as the associated blood vessels and extracellular matrix
what is a group of organs called
a system
what are the two main type of body cavities
ventral and dorsal
what are the two subcategories that the ventral cavity divides into
thoracic and abdominal
what are the two subcategories that the dorsal cavity divide into
cranial and vertebral canal
what are the functions of body membranes
cover body surfaces, line body cavities, form protective sheets around organs
where can connective tissue membranes be found
covering kidneys + synovial membrane
where can epithelial membranes be found
cutaneous (skin), mucous, produces mucous via goblet cells
where is the serous membrane found
in areas that lack openings to the outside of the body. i.e body cavities and around some organs
what produces serous fluid
simple squamous tissue and a loose layer of connective tissue- fluid is used for lubrication
where would you find visceral membrane
outside of oragn
where would you find parietal membrane
lines a portion of body cavity
where are synovial membranes found?
in areas where bones articulate (meet) each other
what does a synovial membrane consist of?
fibrous connective tissue over loose connective tissue + adipose tissue
