A government organisation which inspects schools.
Why does OFSTED exist?
To make sure schools are working at a good standard and to close any that aren’t.
What are league tables?
Where schools are ranked based on things like: SATS, GCSES and A-Levels
What does competition do?
Drives up standards through schools.
What did Tough and Brooks think?
They thought that middle class families are more likely to make an informed choice on their child’s choice of school than working class parents.

The fact that parents now have a choice
What is the myth of parentocracy?
That all parents don’t actually have a complete choice as they may not know how to shop around schools and read OFSTED reports. However, the middle class have the connections in order to choose schools.
How do middle class parents make the most of their choices?
They can move into catchment areas for schools as they have the wealth to do so. They can also take advantage of their societal position.
What is an educational triage?
Categorising students into those who will achieve anyway, those who are hopeless, and those who require support in order to pass.

Carried out research into the effects of marketisation.
What are privileged skilled choosers?
Middle class parents who fully utilise choice.
Who are disconnected local choosers?
Working class parents who find admission procedures difficult or understand.
