Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD)
Policy in which the U.S. and S. Union hoped to deter nuclear war by building up enough weapons to destroy each other.
Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)
A U.S. agency created to gather secret information about foreign governments.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Government agency that coordinates U.S. efforts in space.
Domino Theory
A theory that if one nation comes under Communist control, then neighboring nations will also come under communist control.
Sputnik
The world’s first space satellite. This meant the Soviet Union had a missile powerful enough to reach the US.
U-2 Incident (1960)
U.S. spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union forcing the Eisenhower administration to acknowledge responsibility for the spy mission after lying about it at first.
Red Scare
Fear that communists were working to destroy the American way of life after World War Two.
Hollywood Ten
Group of people in the film industry who were jailed for refusing to answer congressional questions regarding communist influence in Hollywood.
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg
They were convicted in 1951 of giving atomic bomb data to the Soviet Union. They were later executed.
Joseph McCarthy
A Wisconsin senator who claimed to have list of communists in American gov’t, but had no credible evidence. He took advantage of fears of communism in post-WWII America to become incredibly influential. “McCarthyism” was the fearful accusation of being communist during the early 1950’s.
House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC)
A congressional committee that investigated Communist influence inside and outside the U.S. government in the years following World War II.
