Q

Key motifs in ruby Tuesday

A

The interaction “Ruby” has when the men first enter appears to be very impulsive as she is centre downstage and twirling her hair before suddenly running up, upstage and jumps into the men’s arms as they catch her into a cradle. The impulsive nature of this highlights how she is now in power and that the men have to bend to her will, depicting how women are now gaining power and freedom - linking to the hippie movement in the late 60s. Perhaps the use of the “cradle” hold could be a reflection of how Ruby is being reborn and how women in society were being reborn as they were gaining more rights and respects for them and their bodies however this can also be a reflection of mother nature and the hippie movement
Flower hands - the female dancer stands in 5th position with her right foot in front, facing the audience. Her hands ascend up her body to infront of her face connected at the wrist, following her hand with her head. She twisted her wrist in a circular motion while extending her right leg out bending in a pile position, collapsing over her left leg. > flower power, 70’s movement
Four male dancers enter from stage right walking with small slow steps in unison. They stand in a semi circle and click to the front then to the back, mimicking back dancers. The female dancer is loose ballroom hold with a male dancer. As he spins her they grow apart and yet she maintains the position of her arms as if she was in the hold still - could signify her independence.
