Parts of the eye Flashcards
What is the eye?
A sense organ sensitive to colour and light intensity
What is the sclera?
Tough, supporting wall of the eye
What is the cornea?
Transparent layer at the front of the eye which refracts light
What is the iris?
Coloured part of the eye which controls how big or small the pupil is
What does the lens do?
Focuses light onto the retina
What is the retina?
Part at the back of the eye which contains cone and rod cells which are sensitive to light intensity and colour
What do the ciliary muscles and suspensory ligaments do?
Control the shape of the lens
What does the optic nerve do?
Carries impulses generated by receptor cells to the brain
What is the fovea?
The centre of the retina where cones are particularly concentrated at
What is the difference between cone and rod cells?
Cone cells are sensitive to the colour of light and don’t work well in low light conditions. Rod cells only allow you to see in black and white. You can’t see colour in the dark as only your rod cells are working
