Evaluation of stress as a risk factor for addiction Flashcards

Q

A03 - Supporting Evidence?

A

P) One strength of stress as a cause of addiction is there is supporting research.

E) Tavolacci et al (2013) did a study in France where he found that not onlt perceived stress was associated with known addictions such as alcoholism but also wirh risks such as eating disroders and cyber addiction.

E) They found that students at the university were more likely to smoke or drink if they found it more stressful.

L) - This evidence shows that without the distraction from stress in everyday life, anxiety can develop into more complicated mental disorders.

Q

A03 - More supporting evidence?

A

P) Driessen et al found that traumatic events exposed individuals to addiction.

E) 30% of drug addicts and 15% of alcoholics had some form of early trauma in their lives. Also parantel stress has also been linked to susceptability through dopamine receptor development.

L) This adds credibility to the fact that stressful events such as past trauma experinces are a major risk into develiping an addictive behaviour in the future.

Q

A03 - a negative?

A

P) However, stress may noy be the cause.

E) We can’t be sure that stress is a direct cause of why someone becomes an addict. It may be that stress in a consiquence of being an addict. There is no way of establishing this from a researche’s method pespective as we can only study addicts once they become addicted.

E) There will be no before mesaure. Therefore we cannot establish a cause and effect.

L) This could suggest that furhter research may need to be done to find whther stress is a risk factor of addiction or if it occures BECAUSE of the addictive behaviour.
