Benefits of CAD, CAM and CNC Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is CAD
Computer Aided Design is the use of computer software to design and create 2D and 3D design ideas, models and prototyping, eg SolidWorks
What are the advantages of CAD
-All of the required features are set within the programme, eg extrusion, filleting
-Both 2D and 3D drawings can be easily created by the product designer to show clients
-Scaling is not required as drawings care created in full size and features like zooming can be used for clarity by the designer
-Details of the production methods can be taken from the programme
What is Computer Aided Manufacturing
A system of using computer technology to aid the manufacturing process
What are the benefits of CAM
-Very efficient as it produces products/ components quicker
-cost effective overtime- reduction in labour costs
-can create complicated products/ components of a unique shape with unform repeatability
-Can speed up production of low volume products
What are the benefits of CNC
-Can be continuously used 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and only need to be switched off for occasional maintenance
-Modern design software allows the designer to stimulate the manufacture of his/ her idea. This saves time and money
-Less skilled/ trained people can operate CNCs unlike manual lathes/ milling machines which need skilled engineers
