what is diverticulosis?
an asymptomatic outpouch

inflammation of outpouch -> infection
what is the pathophysiology of diverticular disease?
- Herniation of mucosa through weakened muscular walls near BVs.
- Can lead to perforation, fistula formation with bladder
or vagina, intestinal obstruction
what is meckels diverticulum?
Paediatric disorder
-Failure of obliteration of vitelline duct
- Rule of 2’s > 2 y/o
-2 inches long
- 2 ft from ileocecal valve
how is meckels diverticulum diagnosed?
technitium scan
what are the symptoms of diverticular disease?
-LLQ pain
·Constipation
· Fresh rectal bleeding
how is diverticular disease diagnosed?
- CT gold standard
- abdo/ pelvis
what are the risk factors for diverticular disease ?
- age
- COPD + Chronic cough
- increased colon pressure
- low fibre diet
what are the complications associated with diverticular disease?
-SBP (spontaneous bacterial peritonitis)
· Obstruction
· Fistulae
how is diverticulosis treated?
nothing , watch and wait
how is diverticular disease treated?
- bulk forming laxatives- ispaghol
- surgery
