Red Shift Flashcards
1
Q
What is the difference between the wavelength of light from distant galaxies compared to the wavelength of light from closer galaxies ?
A
- The wavelength of light from distant galxies is GREATER than the wavelength of light from closer galaxies.
2
Q
What is red shift?
A
- Red shift is the idea that the further away a galxy is, the faster they are moving and the bigger the observed increase in wavelength of light is.
3
Q
What does The Big Bang Theory say the universe began from?
A
- A small region that was extremely hot and dense.
4
Q
What does observed red shift provide evidence for?
A
- Provides evidence that space itself (the universe) is expanding.
- AND supports The Big Bang Theory
5
Q
Scientists thought that the rate of expansion of the universe would slow down due to gravity. What observations in 1998 go against this idea?
A
- Observation of supernovae suggest that distant galaxies are receding even faster.
- This MAY be explained by the fact that there is matter and energy in the universe that isn’t understood (dark mass dark energy.)
- Perhaps the mass/ energy could explain the increased rate of expansion.
6
Q
What is the name of the mass/ energy in the universe that is still not understood?
A
- Dark mass
- Dark energy
