drugs (topic 15) Flashcards
what are drugs
any substance taken into the body that modifies or affects chemical reactions
in the body
antibiotics
A medical drug that kills bacteria by interfering with some of their important metabolic reactions.
what are different ways in which an antibiotic can affect a bacteria
cause the bacterial cell membrane to break, killing the bacterial cell
prevent bacteria from making new cell walls, so the bacteria cannot reproduce or grow.
do antibiotics affect viruses? why?
no they dont, because viruses dont have a cell wall or cell memebrane meaning antiboitcs cant affect them
explain how antibiotic resistence happens
a bacteria mutates, becoming resistence to the antibiotic, the bacteria population which isnt resistant die, the mutated bacteria survives and when it reproduces by mitosis it transfers its resistant gene to its offsprings, producing a population of resistent bacteria.
what is antibiotic resistence
when a bacteria is no longer affected by the antibiotic
how can you limit the development of resistant bacteria, such as MRSA
use antibiotics only when needed, eg. not with viruses, take as prescribed follow whole course of treatment
