Q

Explain the urine osmolality and Na+ in pre-renal vs renal causes of AKI?

A

Remember wherever Na+ goes, H20 follows

Pre-renal
- due to hypoperfusion often as a result of hypovoloemia -> body wants to retain salt and water -> urine - high osmolality (conc) and low Na+

Renal
- often due to damage to the kidneys which reduces absorption abilities - urine low osmolality (dilute) and high Na+
