They must be able to assimilate factual information and make a reasoned decision
What are thing lay magistrates need
They must be able to work as a team
Magistrates must live or work in local justice area this mean they must live or work close to the magistrates court they are based in
Magistrates must be committed to 26 half days per year
What are the restrictions
The following cannot be a magistrates:
Those with serious convictions
People who are bankrupt
Those who wrk in the forces like police or traffic wardens
Close relatives can’t be appointed on the same bench
