planetary boundaries Flashcards
What is the land system change boundary?
The land converted for human use, not crossed yet.
What is a planetary boundary?
They are the safe operating spaces for all of humanity, once crossed there is risk for irreversible change.
Amber
What is the ozone depletion boundary?
The boundary for ozone, actions taken by the Montreal protocol have helped the boundary not get crossed.
Green
What is the ocean acidification boundary?
CO2 dissolving in oceans producing carbonic acid, aquatic organisms are harmed and foodwebs too.
Amber
What is the climate change boundary?
The rise of CO2 increasing the temp of the atmosphere, this boundary has been crossed.
What is the aerosol boundary?
Atmospheric pollutants and their effects.
What is the freshwater consumption/water cycle boundray?
Use of water worldwide in agriculture, domestic etc.
What is the nitrogen and phosphorus boundray?
Fertiliser and application, uptake by plants and extensive use can cause eutrophication
What is the chemical pollution/novel entities boundary?
The emissions of toxic and persistent substances.
They can cause genetic damages, infertility etc
What is the biosphere integrity boundary?
Biodiversity loss and extinctions, this boundary has been crossed.
What are all of the planetary boundaries?
Land system change
Ocean acidification
Climate change
Aerosols
Freshwater/water cycles
Nitrogen and phosphorus cycle
Novel entities/chemicals
Biosphere integrity
Ozone depletion
What boundaries have been crossed?
Climate change
Biosphere integrity
