Lab- Digestive Enzymes Flashcards
what type of fat is the main target of pancreatic lipase? what are the products of that digestion?
-triglycerides
-products are fatty acids + glycerol
why does digestion of fat lead to a more acidic solution?
because you create fatty acids, which creates a more acidic environment.
function of bile salts?
-help break down fat into smaller molecules
-creates an increase in lipase activity
are bile salts enzymes?
no!
what is starch? what is the product of its digestion by pancreatic enzymes?
-string of glucose molecules
-made by plants
-digested into maltose
what does the iodine test measure?
looks for the presence of starch
what does benedict test measure?
presence of glucose
why did we see a decrease in the digestion of starch in tube 4B?
HCl denatured the enzyme
why did we measure the pH in our four test tubes?
to see if HCl lowered the pH right
why did we incubate some capillary tubes in buffer solutions without enzymes?
negative controls
why does pepsin work best at a pH of 2.0?
it is from an acidic environment in the stomach
why does trypsin work best at a pH of 8.0.?
it is from a more alkaline environment in the small intestine
