Upper Silesia 1920 - was given to Poland, Germans protest, plebiscite held –> majority wants to stay in Germany, Poles protest –> divided into two

Bulgaria 1925 - Greek soldier crosses into Bulgaria - league demands for them to leave and pay

Aaland Islands 1921 - Finland keeps the island, but demilitarize them

A

The Kwantung Army attacks the japanese railroad in China as an escuse to invade.

They claimed that they were trying to restore peace and protect themselves from Chinese anarchy

Following the great depression, the Japanese could not wholly rely on trade

so they were willing to seize Manchuria, which was rich in resources

A

China was in the middle of a civil war (communists vs nationalists)

The region of Manchuria was not controlled by the national government but an independent warlord

Manchuria bordered the colony of Korea, making it easier for the Japanese to access them.

Manchurian crisis - France, Britain and LoN

A

LoN only went as far as moral condemnation - the Lytton committee was sent in 1932 to investigate what happened. By that time, Japan had already established a puppet state of Manchukuo.

Big powers which could have contributed to sanctioning japan were absent - US and USSR

French and British were ambivalent
even pleased, since Japan was pivoting away from THEIR own colonies in the South, invading towards their shared enemy of the USSR
