Nerve Regeneration Flashcards

1
Q

Wallerian degeneration

A

Active process of degeneration that results when a nerve fiber is cut or crushed and the part of the axon distal to the lesion degenerates, the myelin will also degenerate. This process occurs 2-3 days after injury

Q

Contraindications

A

Mx + mvmnts of affected limb CI for 3 weeks after surgery
Do not traction or move jt any way that may limit regeneration
No hydrl until autonomic + vasomotor control have returned
No deep pressure + frictioning on damaged skin
Jt play not performed on affected limb till jt stable

Q

Complete lesions

A

Has damage to all the fibers of the nerve while a partial lesion has damage to only some fibers of the nerve

Q

How fast can a nerve regenerate

A

Occurs at a rate of 1-2 mm a day.
- more distal the injury longer it will take

Q

What is a dermatone

A

Area of skin supplied by a single spinal nerve
-dermatones are useful in neurology for finding the site of damage in the spine
