What are international boundaries?
A border between two or more different countries
What are internal boundaries?
A boundary that exists within a country’s borders. Boundaries are between different regions inside a country.
What are internal boundaries caused by?
political decision: East linking new provinces or states
historical/cultural factors: ethnic and linguistic groups
physical geography: rivers, mountains, etc.
Organizational needs: businesses, non-profit organizations, etc.
what is the census?
An official country or survey of a population, typically recording various details
Happens every 10 years in the U.S.
Dictates the voting districts and representation each state has
What are voting districts?
A geographic area organized together for the purpose of administering elections
What is redistricting?
The process of redrawing districts after the census has occurred
What is gerrymandering?
The process of redistricting a voting district to favor one political party over another
What are different methods of gerrymandering?
cracking, packing, stacking, hijacking, kidnapping
What is cracking?
The process of spreading like-minded voters out across multiple districts
What is packing?
The process of stacking like-minded voters into just a few districts to reduce the impact of their vote in other districts
What is stacking?
The process of creating districts with narrow majority of voters from one group in order to create a larger number of districts where that group has a minority of voters
What is hijacking?
The process of altering district boundaries to move groups of voters into a different district to change the outcome of an election
What is kidnapping?
The practice of altering district boundaries to move a group of voters into a district with a different representatives to change the outcome of an election
