Factors affecting perception:culture Flashcards
perceptual set?
our brains are biased perceiving sensory information
sensory info is detected focus on some parts whilst ignoring others
active procces - inferences we have and depend on other factors
Aim?
different cultures interprited information in pictures differentley
people from different cultures use depth cues differentley
Method?
black south africans:
schooled,unschooled
White south africans
schooled,unschool
both pointing at elaphant and antelope but depth cues suggest what is being pointed at
three question: What did you see? what is the man doing?which is nearer the man, elaphant, antelope?
results?
if it was us cause of height in plane and relative size would have said the antelope but many people said the elaphant
Black and white schooled participants were more likely to perceive depth than the unschooled participants
white schooled participants saw depth more than black schooled participants
conclusions?
part of perceptual set - different depth cues when perceiving a 2d image
schooling - more exposed to 2d images - knew how to interprit them
apertheid - more acces to books and magazines at home so could inteprit the 2d images better - learned - gregorys
evaluation?
weakness: instructions and tasks did not make sense to them
language barrier: researchers and participants - resaerchers rely on translators may not be correct - does not make sense in a different culture question comes up different - misunderstood or unclear - validity
weakness: confused by seeing 2d drawings - balck participants - never seen paper more interested in paper than the proceedure - material more familar with - differnet answer - method of presentation may influence results in cross cultural studiews
