Respiratory structures Flashcards
Trachea
> Hollow tube surrounded by incomplete ring of cartilage that keeps the airways open, allows swallowing, and prevents collapsing
> Provides pathway of air to the bronchi
Nasal cavity
> Warms, moistens, and filters air
Allows inhalation
Epiglottis
> Small sheet of elastic cartilage that sits at the back of the throat
> Prevents food and drink from entering the trachea
Larynx
> Houses vocal cords
Manipulates pitch and volume of sound
Pharynx
> Receives air from the nasal cavity
Receives food for the oral cavity
Bronchus
> Passageway for air into the lungs
Bronchioles
> Passageway for air to the alveoli
Alveoli
> Elastic, moist, permeable, single-layered cells, surrounded by capillaries
Adapted for gaseous exchange
Pulmonary Capillaries
> Surround alveoli, allow for gaseous exchange
Diaphragm and Intercostal muscles
> Primary respiratory muscles
Nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and bronchi
> All have ciliated linings and mucus glands
To clean and filter air
