A

covenanters moved swiftly to capture all ports in Scotland, Edinburgh from south, ireland easy, navy west. it was hard for c.1 to fund all this as ship money not paying (since Hampden case) leading to treaty of Ripon giving land to Scotland (durham/northumberland)

royalist troops sed to duns to issue proclamation to Scots promising they would pardon all rebels if they submitted in 8 days to which the Scots unnerved advanced to Kelso. the earl of Hollands calvary trie to probe the Scottish position and the size and profusion of Scottish forced overwhelmed holland so he retreated back to berwick(English soldiers deserted)
