17 - Paired Tests Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is paired data?
Two pieces of information taken about the same individual (person or otherwise).
Give examples of paired data.
Performance of a fabric before and after chemical application; Length and weight of babies born in September 2023 at Royal Preston Hospital.
Give an example of data which is NOT paired.
Example: The finishing times for semi-finals of the 800m at the Olympics (different athletes in each semi-final). or any other suitable answers
Name three hypothesis tests suitable for paired data.
Paired Sign Test, Paired Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, Paired t-test.
What is the Paired Sign Test used for?
To test for preference or a difference in the median of two samples.
What advantage does the Paired Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test have over the Sign Test?
It considers the size of the differences between the pairs.
What assumption must be made when using the Paired Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test?
The distribution of the differences is symmetrical.
What is the Paired t-test similar to?
The studentβs t-test but used for paired data.
What is the main focus in paired experiments?
The DIFFERENCE, π·, between the results.
What distribution is assumed for the differences in a paired t-test?
A normal distribution: π (π, π2)
What is the test statistic for a paired π‘ βtest?
(π Μ β ππ ) / (ππ / βπ)
Where can the critical values for the t-tests be found?
In the formula booklet, page 19.
