What is a “Blockade Runner”?

A

A ship that had supplies that people in the South needed that would try to sneak through the blockade of ships the North had set up. This was very dangerous, but was very important to be able to continue fighting the war.

What is the C.S.S. Hunley?
What did it do?
How did it work?

A

A submarine built in Mobile during the Civil War. It was an experiment & became the first submarine to ever sink a ship. It had explosives attached to a long pole & they rammed the Union Ship. Everyone aboard the Hunley died.
The men inside the sub turned a crank to turn a propeller. It was people powered!

Tell about the Battle of Mobile Bay.

A

It started on August 5, 1864. Union Admiral Farragut had 17 ships to fight 4 Confederate ships led by Admiral Buchanan. Only 1 of the 4 had iron cladding. The wooden ships were quickly sunk. The CSS Tennessee fought hard, but was sunk too. Fort Morgan did not surrender until all supplies were gone & the fort had been burned, August 24. The north then began their attack on the City of Mobile. The city did not surrender until 8 months later.

A

Burned everything they did not need to take with them.

A

Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse in VA on April 9, 1865. But the news was slow to spread, so battles continued in AL until April 16.

Who was Emma Samson? Why was she a Confederate hero?

A

She was a 15 year old girl who showed Gen Forrest a way to get across a creek near her home. They couldn’t take the bridge because it had been burned by the Union soldiers. This saved their lives.
