1.8 types of cells Flashcards
Gametes:
Haploid sex cells (sperm/egg) fusing to form offspring.
Zygote:
Diploid initial cell formed by gamete fusion, starting a new organism.
Germ cell:
Gives rise to gametes, transmitting genes to offspring.
Meiosis:
Specialized cell division generating haploid gametes from diploids.
Somatic cell:
Makes up body tissues, not transmitting genes to offspring.
Haploid:
Having one set of chromosomes (half the usual number).
Diploid:
Having two sets of chromosomes (the usual number, one from each parent).
Cytosol
The jelly-like fluid that fills the space inside a cell
Mitochondria
membrane-bound organelles found in most eukaryotic cells, and their main job is to generate energy for the cell to function
