What is the problem with BK and JC?

A

they can transform cell lines and cause tumors.

Really tends to only be a problem in immunocompromised.

What does JC cause?

A

progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy

-a demyelinating disease that kills within 3-6 months. infects and nlyses oligodnedrocytes

A

MRI to detectl esions

PCR amplif from infected brain or CSF

What is treatment for PML (progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy)?

A

none they are fucked. Cut back on immunosuppression if transplant. Adjust HAART in AIDS.
