2: prenatal development Flashcards
(19 cards)
conception
when an egg goes to the ovary, then to the fallopian tube. if the sperm meets the egg there, the egg will chemically seal itself off to avoid other sperms from entering. this process is conception
developmental resilience
developing normally despite developmental hazards
such as poor healthcare, low socioeconomic status and low education
zygote
fertilised egg
conception->3weeks
embryo
3-8weeks in the womb
fetus
from 9 weeks to birth
fraternal twins
when 2 eggs are released and fertilised/conceived
-fraternal twins are as genetically similar as siblings
gametes
reproductive cells
sperm and egg
identical twins
fertilised egg then divides to 2 embryos in placenta
happens 4 days after conception
low birth weight
being born at less than 5.5lb
phylogenic continuity
due to common evolution, humans share a lot of traits, and behaviours with animals (esp. mammals)
placenta
separates mother and child through a semi-permeable membrane
premature
being born before 35 weeks
swaddling
wrapping baby tightly in blanket to soothe baby. it provides comfort due to warmth and skin contact
teratogen
external hazards that harm prenatal development
alcohol, illegal drugs, occupational hazards, environmental hazards, smoking, drugs
umbilical cord
allows for exchanging materials (minerals, food, 02/CO2, etc)
zygote
fertilised egg
neural tube
a structure in an embryo that later forms the brain and spinal cord
infant mortality
the death of children under 1y
sensitive period
when the fetus is maximally sensitive to the harmful effects of teratogens.
Each of the major organ systems has its own sensitive period, which is the time when its basic structures are being formed.
