2.1 - North Antrim Coast Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
What lithology factors influence coastal recession?
A
- Age of the rock - ancient limestones compressed and compacted over millions of year are more resistant
- Permeability - GW flow can weaken rocks by exploiting joints
- Unconsolidated material
- If there are any minerals in the rock (e.g. calcite) - can form solution
2
Q
Explain the lithology of the N Antrim Coast
A
- History of volcanism - slow cooling molten basalt erupted 56-62M years ago - now covers most of the N Antrim Coast
- Has preserved softer sedimentary rock underneath - due to warm shallow oceans
- Subsequently covered by ice sheets during Quaternary
3
Q
What type of coastline is the N Antrim Coast?
A
- Discordant
4
Q
How do igneous rocks form and what igneous rocks are in NI?
A
- Form as molten rock cools and solidifies
- Basalt
5
Q
How does sedimentary rock form and what sedimentary rocks are in NI?
A
- Composed of particles/pieces of other rocks laid down in layers over time
- Sandstone, chalk
6
Q
How do metamorphic rocks form and what is a metamorphic rock in NI?
A
- Have been subject to intense heat and/or pressure
- Schist
