Q

What lithology factors influence coastal recession?

A
  • Age of the rock - ancient limestones compressed and compacted over millions of year are more resistant
  • Permeability - GW flow can weaken rocks by exploiting joints
  • Unconsolidated material
  • If there are any minerals in the rock (e.g. calcite) - can form solution

Q

Explain the lithology of the N Antrim Coast

A
  • History of volcanism - slow cooling molten basalt erupted 56-62M years ago - now covers most of the N Antrim Coast
  • Has preserved softer sedimentary rock underneath - due to warm shallow oceans
  • Subsequently covered by ice sheets during Quaternary
