Warren G. Harding
President who called for a return to normalcy following World War One. He believed in laissez-faire capitalism.
Calvin Coolidge
Became president when Pres. Harding died. He acquired the name “Silent Cal” for being so soft-spoken. He believed in the government supporting big business and restored the public’s trust in government after the Teapot Dome Scandal.
communism
Economic and political system in which the government owns the means of production and a single party rules.
anarchist
A person who opposes all forms of government.
Teapot Dome Scandal
A government scandal involving a former United States Navy oil reserve in Wyoming that was secretly leased to a private oil company in 1921. Secretary of the Interior took brides and went to jail.
The Red Scare
A period of general fear of communists after World War One.
Sacco and Vanzetti
Two Italian-born American laborers and anarchists who were convicted and executed in 1927 for a 1920 armed robbery and murder. it is believed they had nothing to do with the crime.
Prohibition
The period from 1920 to 1933 when the sale of alcoholic beverages was prohibited in the United States by the 18th Amendment.
bootlegger
Smugglers of illegal alcohol during the Prohibition era.
speakeasies
An illegal bar where drinks were sold during Prohibition. It was called a speakeasy because people literally had to speak easy so they were not caught drinking alcohol by the police.
21st Amendment
Amendment which ended the Prohibition of alcohol in the US by repealing the 18th Amendment.
Flappers
Carefree young women with short, “bobbed” hair, heavy makeup, and short skirts. The flapper symbolized the new “liberated” woman of the 1920s. Many people saw the bold, boyish look and shocking behavior of flappers as a sign of changing morals. Though hardly typical of American women, the flapper image reinforced the idea that women now had more freedom.
Roaring Twenties
Nickname for the 1920s because of the booming economy and fast pace of life during that era.
Scopes Trial
1925 trial of a Tennessee schoolteacher for teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution. John Scopes lost the trial and his job.
